The switch on of Galashiels Christmas Lights and the largest fireworks display in the south of Scotland by the Braw Lad and Lass. Organised by Galashiels Chamber of Trade as part of its Shop Local campaign. Partly funded by Scottish Borders Council, with the Chamber making up the rest, this years show attracted over 6500 into Galashiels town centre (figures from Lothian and Borders Police).

Thanks to David Houston, Phil Macari and Robin Moncrieff (all Galashiels Chamber of Trade) along with Wilson Jamieson Fencing and Forestry, Murray and Burrell, Galashiels and Langlee Community Council, Galashiels Rotary Club, Scottish Borders Council, Lothian and Borders Police and of course Phenomenal Fireworks for there help. (and of course the many helpers who braved the weather to change bulbs and hang lights)

We decorate our homes every Christmas but when did tradition of Christmas Decorations become traditional? I know that we decorate our Christmas trees because Prince Albert Queen Victoria’s Consort brought the tradition over from Germany and when did the tradition of gift giving become traditional was because St Nicholas (aka Santa Clause) left gift in people homes on the 25th December. When did the tradition of sending Christmas cards become a tradition?

A traditional German Christmas is celebrated on 24th of December and called Heiligabend or Holy Eve. German families use this day to put up their Christmas tree and share a simple family meal of frankfurter sausages and potato salad. Afterwards, they have Bescherung which is German for time for exchanging gifts. so we pretty much got our christmas tree idea from germans.

For about 30 years, Americans had to import their Christmas cards from Britain. It wasn’t until 1875 that the first Christmas cards was printed in the United States.

And the Christmas cards sent back then really didn’t mirror today’s popular cards at all. The Christmas cards of yesteryear tended to have things like flowers and faeries. It wasn’t until the later years that Christmas cards took on a “holiday theme”

The lights are hooked up to a recently installed outside outlet. The lights worked fine on night 1. But now tonight, they will randomly shut off. I hit the reset button on the outlet and it’s fine again, but then they go out again later. It is raining, I don’t know if that effects it at all, but I’m not sure what’s going on.

There’s a bare wire or unsealed socket getting wet and shorting out. Shut it off for now and check them the next day for a short.

Our roof doesn’t have an overhang like most roofs require in order to hang Christmas Lights along the house. I know there are those plastic clips that you can use, but they’re not very durable and i don’t want to count on them the whole holiday season. Any suggestions on how to get my lights up there?
