Christmas Lights 2010 – Wizards in Winter

This is my first animated Christmas Lights display. I have just over 30,000 lights controlled by 32 channels of Light-o-rama controllers. The song is Wizards in Winter by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. It’s used a lot but its a good, fast-paced song for showing off the display.

Christmas Hotels or Market Breaks

I’m sure they switch on the tired old Christmas Lights in my town at around Halloween. And the shops will drag out their usual window displays featuring tinsel and spray-on snow soon after. And this year I’ve just had to book the department’s Xmas party – and it’s August as I write. Christmas can, sometimes, just lose its sparkle – so how can you put a bit of fizz back into the festive season?

Christmas Markets

From late November onwards every year, several of Europe’s greatest cities hold amazing traditional Christmas Markets that positively buzz with hundreds of stalls, thousands of people, and all under a myriad of atmospheric fairy lights. Even the most dedicated of Scrooges among us can’t fail to be filled with Christmas spirit as you join packed pavements that meander throughout the stalls. For added magic, buy a glass of gluhwein (warmed mulled wine) and take it round with you as you browse stalls that sell fresh foodstuffs from cheeses, cold meats & innumerable candied delights to glorious handmade children’s toys that hark back to a time when Christmas was simpler, less expensive, and yet far more magical. The best Christmas markets are considered to be Prague, Lille, Brussels, Vienna and Cologne.

Lapland

Far, far north at the Arctic Circle, Lapland is actually a region covered in pine forests, hills & lakes that straddles the northernmost parts of Finland & Sweden. In December everything is totally blanketed with snow and absolutely freezing – around minus 20 in fact! But you don’t mind the cold weather faced with such natural beauty, and there’s always activities such as sleigh rides, husky rides, and snowmobiling to keep you warm & entertained. There are regular breaks for warm drinks and it’s great to see everyone’s beaming rosy-cheeked faces. But the star of the show naturally gets top billing and is enough to silence children & adults alike in sheer excitement as the end of the trip approaches, as a magical walk through the atmospheric forest paths ends with a visit to Lapland’s most famous resident… the real Santa Claus!

New Year’s Eve

There are some who say if Christmas is for the kids, then New Year’s Eve is for the adults. It’s a chance to get away and party hard with hundreds or even thousands of new best friends. Perhaps the most famous New Year celebrations are held in New York’s Times Square, where a staggering (in some cases literally!) one million people pack themselves in to watch the New Year’s Eve Ball descend from the flagpole that sits on top of One Times Square to welcome the New Year in. London’s Trafalgar Square fills with revellers every 31st December, although the Thames Embankment around the London Eye is a more organised celebration – the London Eye being the centrepiece of the city’s post-midnight fireworks display. But the grand prize for all New Year’s Eve celebrations goes to Scotland’s Hogmanay celebrations, particularly in Edinburgh. The Scottish nation has a particular affinity with New Year, and Princes Street is the focal point for celebrations featuring live bands & street stalls that add to a party atmosphere that you’ll never forget.

This Year (2008) Christmas Movies

Here it is again. That time of the year when, according to the church, we should celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. – According to Bart Simpson, the birth of Santa Claus. – Some of the holiday traditions are sending cards to people you don’t really know and/or only care about for personal gain, decorate the house, the Christmas tree and put up Christmas light – Even tough it might be tiresome and time consuming and will have to removed after a couple of weeks followed by equally beautiful and bright bills -, sing Christmas carols – watch out for cracks on windows, – the last trip to church for the year (First: New Year, Second: Easter), stuff yourself with turkey and other Christmas treats and the most important part, remember that giving is more important than receiving. – Yeah right!

Anyway, there are some great Christmas movies in the theaters.

Four Christmases, Staring: Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspon, Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Jon Voight and Jon Favreau. Synopsis: A couple struggle to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Day. – That’s what happens when you lie then caught.

Nothing Like The Holidays, Staring: Alfred Molina, Elizabeth Peña, Freddy Rodríguez, Luis Guzmán, Jay Hernandez, John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Vanessa Ferlito, Melonie Diaz. Synopsis: A Puerto Rican family living in the area of Humboldt Park in west Chicago faces what may be their last Christmas together. – Don’t let the title fool you.

A Christmas Tale, Staring: Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Roussilon, Anne Consigny, Mathieu Amalric, Melvil Poupaud, Hippolyte Giradot and Emmanuelle Devos. Synopsis: The Vuillard’s shared history of physical and mental illness, estrangement, self harm, and loss doesn’t lead itself to the idea of a cheerful holiday season. But can a Christmastime reunion, a scheme concocted by three of the youngest family members, finally bring peace their clan – The actors might not be familiar because the movie is French. (“Un Conte de Noël”).

Movie which will be release in theater on Christmas are:

Marley and Me, Staring: Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. Synopsis: A family learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and neurotic dog. – Did you see Jen on the cover of GQ Magazine?

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Starring: Brad Pitt and Kate Blanchet. Synopsis: Tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences. – Curious indeed.

Bedtime Stories, Staring: Adam Sandler and Courtney Cox. Synopsis: A family comedy about a hotel handyman whose life changes when the lavish bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew start to magically come true. – Now this seems like an ideal Christmas movie.

Movies which don’t fit in the Christmas genre are: Valkyrie staring Tom Cruise – Who hasn’t been abducted by aliens. Yet. – is the true story about a plot to assassinate Hitler, Revolutionary Road staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet – Yep, their first movie together since Titanic – is about young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children and Frost/Nixon staring Frank Langella, Michael Sheen, Sam Rockwell and Kevin Bacon is a dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and former president Richard Nixon. – We can handle the truth. Can’t we?

To everyone I wish you 2008 Merry Christmases. And Remember don’t drink (alcohol) then drive – drinking and driving is also illegal and dangerous by the way – eat responsibly – you don’t want it to be your last Christmas by sending you cholesterol level to the roof – be careful with lights, candles and fireworks unless you want to be homeless, get a trip to the hospital or host a funeral the next day.

Care and Disposal of Christmas Trees

Since so much time and effort is put into selecting the perfect Christmas tree, it follows that similar consideration should also be given to giving the tree the best possible care.

After the festivities, disposal of your Christmas tree should be done with some consideration also. Safety is also an important reason to take proper care and make proper disposal of your Christmas tree, a drying Christmas tree also presents a grave danger as a fire hazard. The average Christmas tree should last for about five to six weeks if the proper care is given to it.

After selecting a Christmas tree and getting it home, the first thing that should be done is to make a fresh cut and place it into a stand with water. A Christmas tree should be placed in a stand with some water in it; the water will need to be topped up regularly.

A fresh cut is made by cutting about an inch off the bottom in a slight diagonal shape to help the absorption of water. If a fresh cut isn’t going to be made immediately after getting the tree home, it should be placed in a container with water and left to stand in a shaded area that is away from the wind.

If a fresh cut isn’t made and the Christmas tree is left exposed to air, the vessels for transporting water can become blocked. If this happens, another fresh cut can correct the problem and the tree would need to be immediately put in a container with water.

Ensure that the stand for your Christmas tree is solid and not liable to be easily knocked over. Place your tree away from any source of heat to reduce the risk of it drying out. Do not start to decorate the tree until it is firmly in its stand. It is wise not to decorate the tree until after it has been placed firmly in its stand.Several decoration precautions should be taken to lessen or avoid the Christmas tree being a fire hazard.

Old fashioned ornaments that have an open flame should never be used as decorations for your Christmas tree. It is a good idea to check that all your Christmas tree lights are working before you put them on the tree, it will make it easier for you if bulbs need to be replaced. When you check the bulbs also check that the cord isn’t damaged at all and that the connections are intact. If it looks as if there is any exposed wiring do not use the lights.

A good Christmas tree stand should be selected since water is the most important item to getting the longest life out of your Christmas tree.

It has to be large enough to hold sufficient water for your tree which, according to the National Christmas Tree Association, may be up to one gallon every day. Remember when you acquire your stand that some water will be displaced by the base of your tree so this needs to be allowed for. The water will need to be checked and topped The National Christmas Tree Association recommends that one quart of water (two pints)is required for each inch of the diameter of the tree’s trunk.

After Christmas is over and your wonderfully decorated Christmas tree has provided much joy, it is important to remove it before it dries out. You will need to check with your local council (municipality) what arrangements they have in force in regard to disposing of Christmas trees.

There’s also the choice that you can continue to get a different use from your Christmas tree by cutting it to pieces yourself and be environmentally sensitive by using it for mulch.

Things to Do at Christmas

Christmas is one of the few times when families are likely to get together, so ensuring that everyone has a great time is crucial. In some cases you may need to plan activities that will help to keep everyone amused throughout the festive season and the internet is a great place to look for things to do. In this article we look at the top 10 Christmas activities worth considering using when you have family and friends over this year.

1 When it comes to decorating the home ready for Christmas then why not get the whole family involved. You could even ask the children to make some special decorations themselves for hanging on the tree or around the home this year. If you are stuck for ideas then the internet is a great source for arts and crafts.

2. As on Christmas day you will be very busy in the morning preparing the food for lunch, why not prepare something the day before getting your children to assist you. You could even ask them to make some gingerbread items that can then be used as decorations on the tree or which can be used as snacks whilst waiting for Christmas dinner to arrive. But don’t allow them to eat too many else they won’t want the wonderful dinner you have prepared.

3. There is a great game that you can play on Christmas day that all your family and friends can participate in and that is “Remember That Carol”. What happens is that each person will take it in turns to announce what carol it is they are going to sing and then sing one verse of it. This is a suitable game for all to play when travelling in the car as well over the Christmas period.

4. Another great game that you can play with family and friends is charades. But this time rather than just being on any theme you base it around Christmas. So it may be a certain Christmas song that others may have to guess that the person is acting out or it could be in relation to a decoration or even an animal associated with Christmas.

5. If you want to help the younger children in your family wind down on Christmas day or even on the days leading up to it then spend 5 minutes each night reading them a special Christmas story. It is crucial that you let your children decide what stories it is they want read to them each night. Plus every year why not purchase some new books that you can read to them that year as well as the ones they already have.

6. Sometimes families like to open one present on Christmas Eve and if you want to make it a little more memorable make it in to a treasure hunt. You will need to prepare everything in advance and make sure that you give them simple easy clues to follow which they can solve and will lead them to where their gift has been placed. If you find you have not got enough time to actually spend on coming up with your own clues the internet is a wonderful source for getting some very inexpensive ones readymade that you can print off and use.

7. Another activity you may find fun is actually taking a wonder round your neighbourhood one evening to see how other people have decorated their homes. Some people spend weeks before Christmas decorating their homes, not just inside but out so that everyone else can enjoy the festive season. In some cases there may be a charity box left outside where you can make a donation and the money raised is given to a local good cause.

8. Another thing you can do to help make your family Christmas special is for the whole family to learn about where they came from. Through this you and your family can learn about the ways your family use to celebrate Christmas in the past and maybe incorporate some of the activities they use to enjoy into your own. There are plenty of places online as well as speaking with others relatives that can help you to find out just what sort of Christmas your ancestors would have led.

9. Another activity that you could consider doing that you may not have done before and especially if you have young children is to go see a pantomime. Often these take place a few weeks before Christmas and will certainly help you and the rest of the family get into the swing of things.

10. One final activity that you should consider incorporating into your own family’s Christmas festivities is to make a big thing about turning the Christmas tree lights on. Spend the whole day with your family putting the tree up and decorating it then at the end of the day you then gather together and count down to the moment when someone flicks the switch and the lights come on. Why not make it a special event for someone in your family each year as towns and shopping malls do when they get some celebrity in to turn on theirs.

Above we have offered our top 10 Christmas activities which could help to make this festive season for your family and friends special. Certainly the more involved everyone is in this special event then the more enjoyable the time will be and of course you won’t be so stressed out.

The Benefits of a Realistic Artificial Christmas Tree This Year

Christmas is near, so it’s time to hang the mistletoe and deck the halls. Now is the best time to get a new artificial tree for Christmas since holiday decorating is at full throttle. There are more advantages than disadvantages in regard to getting a realistic artificial Christmas tree. The two main reasons not to get an artificial tree are:

1. They lack the smell of a real tree. This is an easy fix as candle companies create a wide variety of scents, including pine scented candles that your family can burn. If you really want the smell of Christmas in your home, light a sugar cookie scented candle in your kitchen.

2. You won’t be able to enjoy the tradition of cutting down your Christmas tree. This is simple enough to remedy. You’re free to visit and tour a tree farm and enjoy their hot cocoa. Then make your journey home and decorate your realistic artificial Christmas tree. The tradition is continued and a tree is saved.

For a much longer list, try looking at a list of reasons why you should get an artificial Christmas tree.

1. The most important reason of all is that you are saving the environment. Another tree is left standing to give us clean air and oxygen when you put up artificial Christmas tree each year.

2. It isn’t necessary to water it. People’s day to day lives are busy enough during the holidays.

3. You save money in the long run. Realistic artificial Christmas trees last a long time.

4. The need to vacuum up needles each day is gone. Sometimes, the pesky things will still be turning up in your carpet months later. They hurt like heck when you step on them barefoot.

5. You have the exact same look from year to year.

6. You won’t have any sap to clean up.

7. Your tree is outstanding. It does not matter how hard you search for the perfect tree; you will never find it. Realistic artificial Christmas trees are perfectly shaped each time.

8. You don’t have to untangle a mess of lights. Stores sell pre-lit trees so you never have to worry about untangling another set of lights ever again.

The reasons for buying a realistic artificial Christmas tree outweigh the reasons not to. This is not only a great investment in your upcoming Christmases, but it’s also a great investment for the future of our planet.
