3M makes removable hooks for christmas decorations, in both small and medium sizes. They are easily removed and do not damage the walls. Can be found at home improvements stores, Walmart, Target.
I would stay away from metal thumb tacks thru the light cords, if you damage the plastic coating with the tack, you can cause yourself to be shocked or cause a fire hazard.
References :
experience

Use really thin long nails. That way your not damaging the wall, and it will be easy to fill in the holes.
References :
Yeah, like the last person said, you can use thumbtacks or nails--just make sure you don't push the tack through the wire--usually christmas lights are made up of 3 or 4 skinny wires all twisted together, and you can push the nail or tack in the spaces BETWEEN the wires vs nailing through the wire itself (which is obviously unsafe, LOL).
References :
Maybe something like this?

http://www.ontimesupplies.com/Scotch_Command_Removable_Adhesive_Utility_Hook_5_lb_Capacity_Plastic_White_item_MMM17003.html

That way you can remove them when you're done and they won't leave a mark
References :
You could hammer some nails into the wall so that the cords sit across them.
