I’m not entirely sure what your question is? You want to teach yourself how to play well, but you don’t want formal lessons.Part of taking formal lessons is learning how to read sheet music and understanding theory. You can teach yourself if you have the patience and more importantly, discipline to do so, but it’s far from easy and hardly worth it in my opinion. I don’t play piano, but I do play other instruments. Teaching myself new songs is rewarding in itself. Knowing how to play is entirely different. There’s a difference between sounding good and knowing what to play and when. If you want to play other peoples music, then you simply need to learn how to read sheet music and go for it. Do what you’ve been doing and practice their music until it sounds perfectly like the piece you’re trying to emulate. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s what you want to do. If you really want to know how to play however, you’re going to need some formal training at least for awhile. Not everyone can be Beethoven or Mozart. A good teacher can save you months or years of aggravation by the very least of showing you what NOT to do in your playing. The rest is really just a good ear and of course rhythm. I feel confident in my chops, but I still take lessons now and again for things I know I’m not particulalry good at doing. You know, the boring stuff no one wants to work on but it makes you better in the end, lol, that sort of thing. Good luck!
