No Christmas Lights-Why electric bill so high?

Our electric bill increased from $384.92 to $632.85 in one month. We didn’t have any Christmas Decorations or anything like that. The only thing I can think of is that I bought a computer after Thanksgiving and had the Internet installed. Could this be the reason? Can there be a mistake?
We live in Texas-not much to heat.
Our meter is located behind some bushes in our front yard. My mom just thinks some meter reader just made up something so he wouldn’t have to go thru those bushes. On the meter I see about 5 little dials, I don’t know how to read it and they don’t seem to be moving.

Is it the end of the billing year. It could be that the budgeting was too low and you owe from each month the meter was higher than the budget.

I’d check the meter and see it against last month’s bill. Maybe some low life has plugged into an outside socket and running a cord to his house and using it to run all his junk? Maybe you’ve got electrical wiring problem?? or maybe they just made a clerical error?

Your meter might be faulty. One month my in-laws electric bill suddenly jumped for no apparent reason so they called the electric company to come check the meter. The electric company refused, so my father-in-law went out after dark one night and took a baseball bat to their electric meter. The electric company came and installed a new meter and their bill dropped down to normal again.

It could be a read error on the part of the meter reader. Take your bill, and reread your meter.

If it wasn’t misread this month, it could have been underread last month and you are paying the price.

Things to do to see if your meter is working properly:

Turn off nearly everything in your home that is plugged in and burning power. Then go out and see if your meter is still turning. If it is, then you have another problem with a piece of equipment that is running your services. It could be a next door neighbor stealing power.

How does this bill compare to your summer months? We were running AC through December because of the outside temps.

Do you have a pool? Pumps that run all the time will run up your bill.
